Girl Scout Basics

Founded in 1912, the Girl Scout Promise and the Girl Scout Law continue to provide the foundation for one of the largest and most influential organization for girls in the world.

The Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God* and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be
Honest and fair,
Friendly and helpful,
Considerate and caring,
Courageous and strong, and
Responsible for what I say and do,
And to
Respect myself and others,
Respect authority,
Use resources wisely
Make the world a better place, and
Be a sister to every Girl Scout.

*Girl Scouts makes no attempt to define or interpret the word "God" in the Girl Scout Promise. We look to individual members to establish for themselves the nature of their spiritual beliefs. When making the Girl Scout Promise, individuals may substitute wording appropriate to their own spiritual beliefs for the word "God".

Check out www.girlscouts.org for more information.

More than 880,000 adult members nationwide participate as volunteer leaders, trainers, program consultants and board members --- dedicating their valuable time, energy and expertise. Adult volunteers serve as role models and mentors and help make a lasting impression on the lives of girls.

Girl Scouts of the USA is a member of the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides (WAGGGS), which serves approximately 3.5 million members around the globe.

To help keep Girl Scouting relevant to the wants and needs of young girls, GSUSA's Girl Scout Research Institute explores issues that face girls everyday, all around the country. Visit the GSRI Web site to learn more about their latest findings.
