Journey to Excellence

Scouting’s “Journey to Excellence” is the BSA’s new council performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of our units, districts, and councils. It is replacing the Centennial Quality Awards Program as a means of encouraging excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA.

District Award of Merit
The District Award of Merit is a council award presented by districts in the same manner that the Silver Beaver is a national award presented by councils.  The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level.  The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 25 traditional units or fraction thereof. The district need not present all the awards to which it is entitled each year.  It is not appropriate to nominate a Scouter who has already received this award.  A professional Scouter or other council employee may not receive this award based on employment service. However, a professional Scouter or employee who also serves as a volunteer Scouter may be eligible, based on volunteer service.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A nominee must be a registered Scouter.
  • A nominee must have rendered noteworthy service to youth in Scouting, outside Scouting, or both.
  • Consideration must be given to the nominee’s Scouting position and the corresponding opportunity to render outstanding service beyond the expectations of that Scouting position.
  • The nominee’s attitude toward and cooperation with the district and/or council is to be taken into consideration.
  • Nominations cannot be considered for posthumous awards.

Family of the Year Award
The Phoenix District Family of the Year Award is presented annually to a family who has, as a group, provided outstanding support to the Scouting program in our District. Often times a family participates at all levels of Scouting, from Tigers to Exploring, with youth and adults involved. Those families that make Scouting a “family commitment” deserve to be recognized.  Candidate families for this Award must have one BSA registered adult member. All such families in Phoenix District are eligible. Any registered adult Scouter may make submit a nomination.

Jack-of-All-Trades Award
The Phoenix District Jack of All Trades Award is for that unit Scouter whose unit always seems to turn to when there is a need within the unit. This Scouter is never afraid to take on a task, no matter how big or small, if the children benefit from his or her labor and devotion. They may not be the ones out in front of the crowd, but they are the backbone of the unit when it comes to dependability. This person does not ask for recognition, only to see happy Scouts. This person could be the Unit Leader, the Advancement Chairman, Committee Member, Scout Leader or Assistant.  Candidates for the Jack of All Trades Award may be nominated by anyone in their Pack, Crew, Troop, Team, Post or Ship or by another Scouter. All registered adult Scouters in Phoenix District are eligible.

Unit Service Award
This award has been created to recognize exceptional BSA leaders who work with youth at the unit level.  Volunteers to consider are those who share their energy, resources and talents with our sons and daughters. It is through their efforts that we learn to truly appreciate the “Spirit of Scouting.”

Candidates for the Unit Service Award may be nominated by anyone in their Pack, Troop, Team, Post, Ship, or by another Scouter.  All registered adult Scouters in Phoenix District are eligible.  The only criterion for nomination is completion of this form.  Each unit is strongly encouraged to consider leaders in their unit for nomination.

Rising Phoenix Award
The Phoenix District Rising Phoenix Award is for that Scouter whose unit always seems to turn to when there is a need within the district. This Scouter is never afraid to take on a task, no matter how big or small, if the youth of our district benefit from his or her labor and devotion. They may not be the ones out in front of the crowd, but they are the backbone of the unit when it comes to dependability. This person does not ask for recognition, only to see happy Scouts. This person may be on a committee or helps when called upon.  Candidates for the Rising Phoenix Award may be nominated by anyone in the district. All registered adult Scouters in Phoenix District are eligible.
