Troop 242

Troop 242 began more than 30 years ago in 1980 by Norman Yeagle and was originally chartered with Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church.  We have always met on Monday nights for our Troop Meetings.  That has just always worked best for our members.  At one point, Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church was not able to house our meetings on Mondays and we were welcomed into charter by Bethania Lutheran Church on Wright and Kentucky Streets in Racine.
The troop is run by the boys under the guidance of the Scoutmaster and Assistance Scoutmaster.  This is called the Patrol Method and is used to teach the boys in the Troop how to lead, teach and coach. This has worked well for Troop 242, as evidenced by having produced 29 Eagle Scouts.  Richard Martin who is the current Camping Chairman was Troop 242's first Eagle Scout.
We have had a history of strong participation in the Order of the Arrow.  Our Scouts have held officer positions in the OA including Lodge and Chapter Chiefs, and four Scouts from T242 have had Vigil honor bestowed on them over the years.  Troop 242 has supported our Wisconsin Scout camps including Robert S. Lyle in northern Wisconsin and Oh Da Kota Scout Camp in Burlington, Wisconsin by participating in many activities held at these camps including summer camping and council activities.
Troop 242's active adult leader David Sutton instigated the Council Wreath Sales that Southeast Wisconsin troops participate in now.  The troops in the SE Wisconsin Counsel used to have several wreath vendors they contacted and contracted with on their own until Mr. Sutton, then Lighthouse District Commissioner, suggested and pushed for the Council to go with one vendor who consistently turned out quality wreaths.  Mr. Sutton has recently retired from active involvement in Scouting activities but has been instrumental in Troop 242's ongoing success.
Our current Troop Committee Chairman, Frank Risler, has held that position for more than 20 years.  He has had two of his three boys, all Scouts, as members of T242 and both have reached the pinnacle of Eagle Scout.  Mr. Risler also has actively participated in not only our troop but Scouting as a whole.  He has done much for T242 and our district as evidenced by his earning the District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver Award and Vigil OA.  He continued to press our troop on to success even while holding the offices of Cub Scout and Boy Scout Roundtable Trainer and Commissioner and District Chairman.
Troop 242 continues to meet on Monday nights from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Bethania Lutheran Church.  We have monthly special activities that include camping and various sports and educational activities.  We welcome and encourage all parents to become active in the development of the Scouts through our activities, merit badge acquisition and leader-training opportunities.
