Pack 485 Pinewood Derby Rules

The intent of the Pinewood Derby is to strengthen the relationship between the Cub Scout and his parent(s) by the introduction of a construction project requiring planning, design and building techniques. The success of the project is in the construction of the car itself, not in the resulting races. The race will determine the fastest car in the fairest setting, but it will not necessarily reflect the most successful project. As the construction of the car strengthens the Cub's relationship with his parent(s), the race strengthens the Cub's character by accepting winning and losing gracefully. The Pinewood Derby race should be an enjoyable and fun family experience for all those participating.

Remember, "Keep It Simple, Make It Fun!"

  • All cars must be built from the official Boy Scouts of America kit #17006. All functional racing parts (e.g., wheels, axles) shall be from those items provided in the kit only. There is no exception concerning substitutions for any functional part. Other kits, such as "Pine Car" brand (from Michael's**) and other derby-style cars in part or whole are not allowed and are subject to immediate disqualification, even though such cars may meet the following requirements.
[Note also that ALL Pine Car brand kits are unacceptable - the axle distance is incorrect, and the wheels/axles are not regulation.]
  • Total width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
  • Total length shall not exceed 7-3/8 inches.
  • Total weight of car shall not exceed five ounces. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in the car. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood, plastic, or metal only, provided it is securely built into the body.
  • The pre-drilled axle insertion grooves located on the body of the car shall not be moved from their original locations found on the rough-cut block of wood in the kit. They may be straightened, but the wheelbase (4-3/8 inches) may not change. Make sure you have the proper 3/8 inch minimum vertical clearance above the ground.
  • Wheel bearings, washers, bushings and wheel coverings are prohibited.
  • No lubricating oils may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite only PRIOR to the first race.
  • The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
  • The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting device.
  • Wheels must have 90% or better of original tread surface on track. All four wheels must make contact with the surface of the track.
  • No loose materials of any kind are allowed are allowed on the car. Ornamental design features are permitted provided they are permanently attached to the body of the car.
  • Cars are to be constructed each year to be eligible to race in that year's event. Cars constructed and raced in previous years' events are ineligible for current race events.
  • The first, second, third and fourth-place cars will be quarantined at the completion of the Pack's Pinewood Derby competition and held by a Pack representative until the District Pinewood Derby competition. The top four cars from each Pack will be eligible to compete at the District Pinewood Derby race.
  • All Cub Scouts--Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos--are eligible to race.

ANY VIOLATION OF THE ABOVE LISTED RULES WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.
