Boy Scout Stuart Yorty wants to GiveBack to troops

We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s the little things in life that mean the most.”

For Stuart Yorty, a Waynesboro Boy Scout working on his Eagle Scout project, those words hit home.

The homeschooled ninth-grader is organizing a collection of toiletries, snacks, DVDs, CDs, greeting cards, tissues, drink mix and books that he will pack into bags and send to soldiers deployed from nearby Army bases.

Stuart, 15, is calling on people throughout the area to donate to Operation GiveBack.

“This a way to encourage our soldiers and to show them how much the community appreciates their sacrifices,” according to the teen, a member of Troop 88 and son of Jeff and Ann Yorty.

Reminders of home

Stuart researched the needs of deployed soldiers by talking to his father, who is retired from the Air Force, and other soldiers who recently returned from deployments in the Middle East.

“I learned that deployed soldiers often have a difficult time obtaining basic necessities such as toiletries, and they always enjoy receiving reminders of home,” noted Stuart, who has been involved with Boy Scouts since he was 5 years old.

That’s when he came up with the idea of involving the entire community in the project.

Stuart also is hoping to include a small digital photo key chain in the GiveBack Packs, “so the soldiers can download pictures from home and easily carry them.

“I thought that if each person or group collects just one or two items for the GiveBack Packs, it wouldn’t be too much for any individual. The soldiers receiving the GiveBack Packs will know that many people in the Waynesboro area cared enough to help.”

Asking for help

“For the past month I have been writing letters and talking with people all around the community,” said Stuart.

All of the Waynesboro Area School District elementary schools are helping with the project.

“If all 2,000-plus students each bring one or two items, there will be plenty of the basic toiletries,” he added.

Area churches and youth groups are involved, according to Stuart, who also is contacting businesses and civic organizations. Collection boxes at set up at the Waynesboro Post Office and the YMCA.

Stuart even recruited help from friends in other states to fill the GiveBack packs.

“As more and more people become involved, the soldiers receiving the GiveBack Packs will realize that they are not forgotten while they are overseas fighting for our freedom,” he explained.

Packing GiveBack Packs

By June 5, Stuart hopes to have collected all the necessary items to make at least 300 GiveBack Packs. Later in June, he will recruit volunteers to pack the items into plastic bags.

“During that phase of the project, I will be making a video to send so the soldiers can see for themselves how the community responded,” he explained.

After the GiveBack Packs are filled and the video is finalized, Stuart will deliver his cargo to Fort Meade in Maryland.

“From there, the Army will deliver the GiveBack Packs to soldiers who are deployed in the Middle East,” he said.

Stuart also is asking people to write letters of appreciation to send to the soldiers.

“I think that the letters and pictures might be the thing the soldiers appreciate the most,” he said.

“The reason that I chose this project is because I am extremely thankful for my freedom and want to show the soldiers that I care,” Stuart said. “And I am grateful to all the people who are helping with my Eagle project.”

BOY SCOUTS TROOP 88

BOY SCOUT TROOP 88 - WAYNESBORO, PA

Why choose Scouting?

If you're looking for a fun activity for your son that will change his life and make him a better adult, then get him involved in Scouting.

A well-rounded boy should have involvements with his family, church, school, Scouting, music, sports. Our program makes time for these other important commitments, and we hope that you as parents encourage your son to take full advantage of a variety of life experiences while he is growing up, and not be too narrowly focused.

Scouting is GAME with a PURPOSE—to develop future leaders of:

  • strong character
  • good citizenship
  • all-round fitness

The eight methods used by all good troops make Scouting unique:

  • Scouting Ideals (Promise, Law, Motto, Slogan)
  • Patrol System
  • Advancement
  • Outdoor Program
  • Adult Role Models
  • Leadership Development
  • Personal Growth
  • Scout Uniform

Who Can Join/When to Join/How to Join

To join, a boy must be minimum age 10 and either have finished Fifth Grade, OR have earned the Arrow of Light Award, OR be age 11 (whichever occurs first). He does not need to have been in Cub Scouts or Webelos.

The Boy Scouts of America requires Scouts to be boys who meet these age requirements. Troop 88 expects its members to be active, to wear full uniform, and to advance regularly. We encourage parent(s) to be active with their son.

Troop 88 is open to any boy who meets these requirements, and who subscribes to the principles of Scouting contained in the Scout Promise and Scout Law. Membership in our sponsoring church is NOT a requirement (actually, most of our Scouts do not belong to our chartered organization).

Although Scouts can join anytime during the year, most join between January and May. It is very important for new Scouts to attend summer camp their first year.
