BSA & Troop 41 Declaration of Religious Principles

The Boy Scouts of America maintains that NO Scout or Scout Leader can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God.  In the first part of the Scout Oath or Promise, the Scout (young & old) declares, "On my Honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my Country and to obey the Scout Law."

The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgement of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizen, and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members. No matter what the religious faith of the Scouts may be, this fundamental need of the Scouts should be kept before them.

The Boy Scouts of America (and Troop 41), therefore, recognize the religious element in the training of the Scouts, but is nonsectarian in its attitude toward that religious training. Its policy is that the home and the organization (Knights of Columbus) with which the Scout is connected shall give definite attention to his religious life.

* (Note: All references to Scout or Boy Scout applies equally to adult Scout Leaders.  Adult Scout Leaders sign the same application to become a member of BSA, they take the same Scout Oath, and the same Scout Law.  Adult leaders are considered to be a Scout regardless of age, and are expected to maintain the same values and principles whether they are a yound Scout or old Scout.  BSA's principle is that "Once A Scout, Always A Scout."
